The author of this image needs to swap the location of User Mode and Kernel Mode as depicted - it is incorrect as represented. The depiction of Kernel Mode and User Mode in the image is reversed from reality regarding all known OS software architectures.
User Applications, Shell and GUI execute in User Mode, while the Kernel Mode is everything depicted BELOW the System Call Interface: Kernel, Device Drivers, Hardware.
