Description from instagram:

SNEAK PEEK of gorgeous Pluto! The dwarf planet has sent a love note back to Earth via our New Horizons spacecraft, which has traveled more than 9 years and 3+ billion miles. This is the last and most detailed image of Pluto sent to Earth before the moment of closest approach - 7:49 a.m. EDT today. This same image will be released and discussed at 8 a.m. EDT today. Watch our briefing live on NASA Television at: http://www.nasa.gov/nasatv The high res pic will be posted on the web at: http://www.nasa.gov. This stunning image of the dwarf planet was captured from New Horizons at about 4 p.m. EDT on July 13, about 16 hours before the moment of closest approach. The spacecraft was 476,000 miles (766,000 kilometers) from the surface. -- 11:47, 14 July 2015‎ 80.201.176.103

OK, an admin may add "at about 20:00 UTC" to the date field. --Itu (對話) 12:15, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

how got?

[編輯]

Is it cutted out from screen-display or did someone found the file URL for direct download? --Itu (對話) 12:37, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

I grabbed a screenshot since I didn't see any download link or ways to save it, but it appears to be hosted here: https://igcdn-photos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/t51.2885-15/11311925_687877714680167_484233801_n.jpg (from the page source). We should have it soon from NASA websites, anyway. --Njardarlogar (talk) 12:48, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
OK, i've found that, too, right now. Last-Modified-time ist "Tue, 14 Jul 2015 11:00:21 GMT", btw. from that URL. Thanks for your engagement. --Itu (對話) 12:59, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
Here is a 1024px version at NASA Twitter: [1] Tried to upload, but it says

Yeah, it's included on the main page of French Wikipedia, so I can't even edit 'my own' upload. Admins would need to do any changes - which could wait till its uploaded to NASA's serves, I think; so that we are sure what we got. --Njardarlogar (talk) 13:17, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
Ok, it's up at NASA here now. Judging by the file name, it appears to be same file converted to jpeg. --Njardarlogar (talk) 13:37, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
That 1024px version seems to be upscaled without better resolution. --Itu (對話) 14:31, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

Detailed description from NASA

[編輯]

Description from http://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/pluto-is-dominated-by-the-feature-informally-named-the-heart

Pluto nearly fills the frame in this image from the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) aboard NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, taken on July 13, 2015 when the spacecraft was 476,000 miles (768,000 kilometers) from the surface. This is the last and most detailed image sent to Earth before the spacecraft’s closest approach to Pluto on July 14. The color image has been combined with lower-resolution color information from the Ralph instrument that was acquired earlier on July 13. This view is dominated by the large, bright feature informally named the “heart,” which measures approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) across. The heart borders darker equatorial terrains, and the mottled terrain to its east (right) are complex. However, even at this resolution, much of the heart’s interior appears remarkably featureless—possibly a sign of ongoing geologic processes.

[編輯]

Image also belongs in Category:Photographs taken on 2015-07-1367.101.5.37 19:23, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

Or is it Category:Photographs taken on 2015-07-14? When is it taken? We should tell the difference between local time and en:Coordinated Universal Time at the description page. And we can use the photo in July 2015, Category:2015-07-14 and maybe our still very empty Commons page 2015 then with a better short description. --84.162.192.60 19:24, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
Taken 13 July at 20:17:35 UTC (spacecraft time). Here is the raw image. --Njardarlogar (talk) 13:16, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

Amend summary request

[編輯]

The following line could be added to the information template in the summary:

  • |other versions ={{extracted image|File:Tombaugh Regio.jpg}}

as the referenced image is widely used on wikipedia. Cheers, Rfassbind -talk 09:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

Higher-res

[編輯]

Can someone upload http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2015/7/16/1437043396995/edccf1aa-0994-4f9b-9061-99b6db0f7217-2060x2060.jpeg over this? I suspected a higher-res version would be floating around by now; it is, we should use it. Source is http://www.theguardian.com/science/gallery/2015/jul/16/pluto-and-other-historic-first-pictures-of-planets - ultimate source is NASA. Adam Cuerden (對話) 01:57, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]

No, that image is blown up - it is not of higher resolution. The raw image is here. Improved versions (read: mosaics of individual higher-resolution frames) of that image is not expected until September. --Njardarlogar (talk) 10:20, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
Actually, it appears that a mosaic has already made its way down: http://www.brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssbjul15b.html#31. However, this one is copyrighted, so we have to wait for a release from NASA (and I suppose it should be uploaded to its own destination, anyway, since it is made up of newer images, and would certainly not fit the file name). --Njardarlogar (talk) 09:12, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[回覆]
