Legitimacy?

[edit]

Is there any source on this flag? Reverse search just links back to the .png Commons file this .svg is based on, without any reliable source or anything. It's quite a bummer since this flag is getting increasingly used on Wikipedia. HolonZeias (talk) 15:27, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As the uploader of this file, I can confirm that I didn't find any other resources on the web either, apart from this [1], that refers back to wikipedia, so it's not really a reliable source. I vectorised and uploaded the file that was uploaded by another user, never expecting that it could get wider use through interwiki. I can request the file to be renamed and tagged as "fictional" to prevent further use. I don't think that Sephardi Jews have a widely recognised flag. There are a few flags mostly found on reddit and tagged as "proposals", and most of them use similar symbols, such the one seen here [2]. I don't think that this file should be deleted, since there are similar flags on commons, which are user-created and mostly purposed to represent languages, such as the Alemannic , or the Dutch Low Saxon flags, which similarly have wide use throughout interwiki.-- Argean (talk) 07:13, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe renaming it into "proposal" or "fictional" could be of some help imho. That being said, the Sephardi flag proposal you have linked to on Reddit is very probably based on your own flag. I do not think these files should be deleted at any cost, but my opinion on this Sephardi flag is no different from my opinion on the ones you've linked to - and, again in my opinion, I strongly believe Wikimedia should do something given its power in making something "official" just because it appears on the top of Google Images thanks to the popularity of this website and general laziness of a lot of people. --HolonZeias (talk) 19:36, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Something, but what? There can't really ever be an 'official' status for flags not representing an organisation, so it comes down to [non]extent of adoption IMO. Arlo James Barnes 00:10, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If a flag gains notoriety amongst a group it become a legitimate symbol. This here is just a random design a random user came up with and was later uploaded to Wikipedia. HolonZeias (talk) 18:30, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
