Text:
Sea ice area in square meters, for northern and southern hemispheres. * Black line is the southern hemisphere sea ice area. ** The Southern Ocean sea ice around Antarctica both covers a larger area than the boreal counterpart and more of it melts during local summer. * Blue line is the northern hemisphere sea ice area. ** Sea ice around the North Pole melts off surrounding shallow continental shelf areas in the summer, but a larger area of the Arctic Ocean remains ice covered than in the southern hemisphere area.
