Quadruple version of “Solomon’s sigil (seal) or Knot”[edit]

Why is this image referred to as a “knot” when it clearly does not function as a knot? Why is this image named after (or is referencing (presumably “King Solomon”) when there is archaeological evidence of this symbol/image which would pre-date King Solomon, and from a number of sites around the world and, geographically, at great distances from where King Solomon is reputed to have lived or ventured?
