Handball

@NikNaks: Hey. I wish to add a handball to the image. Handball is the second or third most played team sport in the world and an Olympic sport. Therefor I think it should be at this image. I would add this image, File:Ballon de handball.svg, to your file. Is this ok?--Malo95 (留言) 09:11, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[回复]

@Malo95: Thanks for getting in touch.
I'm afraid I cannot find any material to back up what you have said about its popularity and it does not appear on any top ten lists of participation that I could find whereas football (soccer), basketball, baseball and cricket do. I also don't think that being at the Olympics is a good rationale for adding it to this file, since most of the balls featured don't represent Olympic sports anyway.
The other problem I have is that from the picture, the handball is essentially a small football, so to most people it would look as if there were two soccer balls in the image rather than a soccer ball and a handball. The rest of the balls features are all distinctive in size, shape or surface texture which is why the combination works nicely.
If you can respond with a better justification then I can reconsider. Otherwise, I don't see the point in editing what is a highly used and highly visible file across the different language 'pedias. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 12:26, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[回复]
@NikNaks: Thanks for your answer.
I would not offend you but most of the people from England have no idea how big handball really is. Also most of this top ten lists which you mention are from the USA if a guess right and they have also handball not at there radar.
  • For example at the Rio Olympics Handball was the second most watched sport behind football. [1]
  • All ball games which were played per hand were under the umbrella of the International Amateur Handball Federation until the separate federations were founded. [2]
  • More or less in every European country handball is the second biggest team sport.
  • More than 1.65 billion people in 175 territories watched the 2016 European Men's Handball Championship [3]
That are only some points to show you how big handball really is. I create an example how I think the file should look like. But in the in the end is your decision because is your file.--Malo95 (留言) 12:34, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[回复]

@Malo95: I am not really convinced that you have appreciated my points.
I am fully aware of the popularity of handball throughout Europe. The goalkeeper for the team I support (en:Kasper Schmeichel) and his father are both well-known to have played handball, speak about its popularity, and credit the game with their own skills.
The top-ten lists I have found are based on a variety of fair criteria. This is a good example. Most that go beyond ten do mention handball eventually; it is not that they are unaware of its existence!
To answer your points:
  • Being "second most watched at the Olympics" is not what is being presented by your source. It highlights that the second-most tickets were sold for that as a sport. This would be expected since both handball and football run many matches over the full length of the games, unlike other sports which only have events for 4-5 days. By your argument, under-23 football is a more widely supported sport than handball, which is unlikely to be true.
  • Historical governing bodies are not an argument to a sport's current popularity. One could make a similar argument about en:Real tennis vs. squash, tennis and badminton.
  • If you read this article you will note that:
    • These figures were released by the governing body, not an independent source
    • This number is a cumulative total across 2,958 hours of coverage, not the number of individual viewers tuning in. Poland contributed 430 million people (1/4) to the total despite having a population of 38 million. Even if 50% of the entire Polish population watched 20 hours each (this is a high estimate, and it is more likely that fewer individuals watched more hours), this would only imply global viewership of around 80 million, which would not put it anywhere close to the most-watched sports events.
I do not dispute that handball is a popular sport, and may be one of the most popular team ball sports, but it is not as widely understood or supported as other ball sports in general, and there is no real benefit or reason to add it to this image.
The image you provided looks, to me, like a second football has been added, or perhaps a volleyball. The ball itself is not particularly distinctive and this was one of my reasons for not adding it to the image--that you did not respond to ;)--since it needlessly clutters the image. The other balls are all distinct from one another as well as representing popular sports.
I remain unconvinced, but as before, feel free to respond if you wish to try to change my mind again. NikNaks talk - gallery - wikipedia 14:49, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[回复]
