Just my $0.02:

The tracks 7 and 8 are not only separated for customs and immigration reasons, but also (mainly!) because the French railway system uses 25 kV lines with 50 Hz whereas the Swiss railway lines use 15 kV with 16.7 Hz (former 16 2/3 Hz).

The smaller TER trains are not capable to accept multiple AC standards.
