Masks are from Vanikoro, not Utupua
[edit]I am pretty sure those masks are not from Utupua, but from the neighbouring island of Vanikoro. It is possible that the museum's records indicate Utupua (?), but I'm pretty sure that would be a mistake. I've been to Vanikoro, and have taken a photo of exactly the same mask/headdress. I don't believe they exist on Utupua.
The names given for the masks (“Aele teulungo”, “Tamate Mata-teva”) are all in the Teanu language, which I speak. Finally, note that some websites get it right: [1], [2], [3], [4]. It is possible that Utupua is the origin of the other (eyeless) fibre figure that can be seen here, and that the caption to that item was wrongly attributed to the masks too. Based on this evidence, I'll change "Utupua" to "Vanikoro" in the caption of this photo. — Womtelo (talk) 08:00, 17 July 2012 (UTC).
