incorrect citation, bad data

[edit]

This discussion is also taking place over here.

This image file contains data that is cited incorrectly. The image file gives as its source: "Gruère, G. & Sengupta, D. (2011), Bt cotton and farmer suicides in India: an evidence-based assessment, The Journal of Development Studies, 47(2), 316-337." This document can be found here.

This is not a correct source. That document, published January 2011, does not contain the data in the image file. The data in the image file is apparently from an earlier draft of the above-named document. That earlier draft, a "Discussion Paper" from October 2008, which can be found here, contains the data in the image file on page 6 (p12/64 in the PDF), Table 3, "Rates of farmer and total suicides, 1997–2005". Table 3 is given a source of "Sainath (2007a)". Sainath (2007a) is listed at the end of the October 2008 draft as "Farm suicides rising, most intense in 4 states. The Hindu, November 12, 2007." a digital version of which can be found here. A close reading of Sainath's November 12, 2007, article will show that it does not, in fact, contain the data that Gruère and Sengupta include in their October 2008 draft's Table 3. Gruère and Sengupta made a series of incorrect calculations based on a misread chart. This "Table 3" and all references to farmer suicide rate per 100k are removed from the peer-reviewed version of Gruère and Sengupta published in January 2011. This image by M Tracy Hunter should be changed to reflect the actual data source; should be removed from the article it's included in, [1]; and should probably be deleted because it contains false data. 2001:558:6035:41:5465:649D:CC52:72A6 17:53, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Table 3 of G&S (2011) is based on Sainath (2007a). Anyway, let's keep the discussion in one place: here. M Tracy Hunter (talk) 06:46, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are not correct. Table 3 of G&S (2011) is about pesicide use, not suicide rates -- you need to check the dates on the articles you are referencing. You also inserted some discussion history from another page into this talk page in your last edit, which I've removed. But yes, let's keep the discussion elsewhere if possible. That discussion is happening here and here 2001:558:6035:41:5465:649D:CC52:72A6 20:18, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
