Comment[编辑]

@Episanty: By the way, the CIPM has an official new SI logo for publicity purposes with seven specific colours for the units. Would it be worth revising this diagram to match? (The order of the units in the circle should not be updated; the one in this diagram was carefully chosen to make the arrows clear.) 23.83.37.241 09:48, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[回复]

@23.83.37.241: Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, it's probably worth revising the colour scheme in this diagram to match the 'official' colour scheme. I'm not sold on the re-ordering, (I'll have to think about it, but the order in this diagram was chosen to make the inter-relations clear, and to the extent that the logo's ordering messes with that clarity, I'm going to steamroll over it and keep the clearer relations) but there's no harm in adopting a more standardized colour scheme. @Episanty: I think it would make sense to remove the "New SI" heading from the SVG altogether. First, "New" is a relative term, and we will eventually be using this diagram in many articles where it is no longer relevant. Next, SI is International. Even if we did wish to use a word, it should probably be in French, not English. Note that this diagram is used in many non-english Wikipedias. I think we should remove the whole title, but another alternative is to just remove the "New" and keep the "SI". If we keep the "SI" I would move it to the upper right corner to allow the whole SVG to be vertically shorter. If you do decide to remove the "New", I will help you check the places it's used in en.wikipedia and modify the text titles where needed. BTW, thanks for the initial diagram and its improvements. It adds a lot to the articles it is used in. -Arch dude (留言) 19:03, 19 August 2019 (UTC)[回复]

I don't think that's the right approach at this time (and I don't think it's worth my time to make those edits). I agree that maybe this should be reconsidered in a year or so, though.Episanty (留言) 18:11, 2 April 2020 (UTC)[回复]
"Old SI" and "New SI" headings should be changed to "SI 1983-2019" and "SI 2019-" or just simply removed. --2001:56A:72E9:D900:E8BF:63CB:C273:30E6 22:20, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[回复]

License[编辑]

Great picture, but why is this stated to be "own work"? From the technical point of view, it is, but from the design point of view, its copyright seems to be held by the BIPM. The Copyright Information section of the Revised SI Download Area says it's for non-commercial use only. Some of their pictures were also published under CC BY-ND 4.0 (e. g. here), but apparently not this one. --Colt browning (留言) 14:53, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[回复]

That's a bonkers argument. This is listed as "own work" because it is my own work. The BIPM does not own the copyright on the concept of "the SI units arranged in a circle contained in shapes". I'm unaware of any relevant prior work (showing the correct dependency graphs), and to the extent that there is similar previous work, it is either too different to be even a vague candidate for this, or the shared aspects are just uncopyrightable ideas. I'm happy to examine *relevant* previous work, but this kind of argument pointing to the images you've shown is nothing but a waste of time. Episanty (留言) 18:11, 2 April 2020 (UTC)[回复]

Too many line crossings[编辑]

This picture doesn't need so many lines crossing each other, which makes make it hard to understand. It's possible to rearrange the vertices into a w:planar graph. Here's a mockup I made in w:GeoGebra:

Mockup of a planar embedding of the unit dependencies for SI measurements.

I don't have the energy to rearrange the image like so but I hope someone else can do it. BenbowInn (留言) 19:11, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]

@BenbowInn: That's true, though the arrangement is to be consistent with these related images:

  • Perhaps another diagram can be created just to show the planar map? Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 06:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]
P.S. Excapt for m → kg, the arrows also point roughly downwards, implying inheritance. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 14:52, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]

@BenbowInn: I've compacted the graph by bending two of the arrows, as above. What do you think? Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 10:13, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]
I would prefer if the edges s-cd and s-kg were straight rather than bent. BenbowInn (留言) 22:14, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]
The previous version has that. The discs are much smaller and most of the diagram is whitespace. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 13:12, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[回复]
