Misinterpretation

The photograph would be unusual for its time if simply a portrait of a woman and her slave girl. But it is more likely an intimate photograph of a woman and her enslaved granddaughter, or her free but lower social status granddaughter. A forensic examination of the facial characteristics of the pair may better explain the probability.
