I cannot see a consistent measure as to which nations / states are shown as an empire (coloured) and which are not (light grey). The same is true for other maps in this series (1898, 1936, 1945). Following are examples:

- Germany: listed as an empire in 1920 and 1936 although it had lost all its oversees colonies and all (former Prussian) territories with at least partly non-German-speaking population. Turkey and Austria lost their empire status, which is correct.

- Japan: shown as empire in 1920 and 1936 (correct) but also in 1898, based on which colony?

- Russia: is shown as empire in 1920 and 1936 but not in 1945, why not? After WW2 Russia regained some territories it had lost after WW1 (e.g. the Baltic states), so its status should not have changed.

- China: same ist true as for Russia. China lost Mongolia and Tibet until 1920 but is still shown as an empire. (It also lost its emperor then or shortly after.) It is not shown as empire in 1945 although it regained Tibet.

Could someone please comment on this? If there is not a reason for presenting things this way they should be changed. the preceding unsigned comment is by Sarge.muc (talk • contribs)

Also The Hejaz was independant of Saudi Arabia. the preceding unsigned comment is by 24.59.97.219 (talk • contribs)

It supposed to show selected powerful countries, not neccessarily empires. I have added Hejaz (not completely sure of location) --Astrokey44 10:47, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updated map (cannot manually update)[edit]

I've updated the map to fix a small number of errors to make it correct for a 1920 date.

Updated map of Colonial Empires in 1920

Hainan has been changed back to grey and China has been removed from the key on the side, as China is not a colonial empire.

Germany has been removed from the key, as they are not a colonial empire at this time.

Jan-Mayen has been removed from Norway's empire, as they were not ceded until 1929

The Panama Canal has been given to the United States.

Sikkim has been added to the British Empire.

Erroneous markings in Anatolia.[edit]

The colored markings on the 1920 map of Anatolia are wrong, because after the World War 1, Woodrow Wilson's 14-point plan did not apply to the Italian and French territorial claims. Therefore, these areas were briefly occupied, but still part of the Ottoman Empire and its successor state Turkey due to the Turkish War of Independence. The war of independence lasted from 1919-1922, so the colored markings were still areas of conflict. The Italians weren't stationed that far north either. So I ask for a correction.
