Summary[edit]

Description

We transfer to the Yellow Line which will bring us to El Alto, specifically to the yellow building at the top left which is the Mirador/Ciudad Satélite (Aymara name: Qhana Pata) Station where the Yellow Line terminates. [Heading here towards Buenos Aires (Aymara name: Quta Uma) Station where the turn to the left gets made.]

The cable car transit system, known as Mi Teleférico (My Cable Car), opened in 2014 with three lines, Red, Yellow, and Green, the colors of the Bolivian flag. Two more lines opened in 2017 with an additional six lines planned. It is the longest aerial cable car system in the world

La Paz (elev.3,240m/11,942ft) was founded in the Andes by the Spaniards in 1548 in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River. The administrative capital of Bolivia shifted to La Paz in 1898 while Sucre remained the constitutional and judiciary capital.

On the western rim of the canyon on the Altiplano (High Plain) is the satellite city of El Alto (The Heights; elev. 4,150m/13,615ft) where there is flat land for the airport. The area was uninhabited until 1903 when the railroad reached the canyon rim and railway workers settled there to staff the railyards and depots. The district was politically separated from La Paz in 1985 and then formally incorporated as a city in 1987. Today El Alto is the second-largest city in Bolivia (after Santa Cruz) and the highest major metropolis in the world. The population is mostly indigenous, primarily Aymara.
