Die Bezeichnung „Bernhard II. Burg“ ist irreführend. Es handelt sich um die alte Burg „Lipperode“ an einem wichtigen Übergang über den Fluss Lippe in der Nähe der Stadt Lippstadt. Die Burg war Amtssitz des Lippischen Drosten für das Amt Lipperode. Dass Bernhard II. zu Lippe hier geboren sein soll, dürfte auf einem Irrtum beruhen. Denn Lipperode war nie der Stammsitz der Lipper. Dieser lag in Lippstadt. Das Foto zeigt die vor einigen Jahren restaurierten Ruinenreste der Burg. Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts, von 1604–1608, ließ Simon VI. zur Lippe (1563–1613) um den Amtssitz Lipperode einen fünfzackigen Festungsstern durch den berühmten niederländischen Festungsbaumeister Johan van Rijswijk in altniederländischer Festungsbaumanier errichten. Die Festung hatte einen Durchmesser von ca. 230 m und einen umlaufenden Festungsgraben von ca. 26 m Breite. Johan van Rijswijk wurde Lippischer Hofbaumeister. Er veränderte auch die Lippische Burg Vahrenholz in der Nähe von Rinteln. Seine letzte Ruhestätte fand er in der Kirche von Langenholzhausen. Sein Grabstein steht heute an der südlichen Außenseite der Kirche. Die Festung Lipperode existierte nur wenige Jahre. Simon VII. zur Lippe (1613–1627), der Sohn und Nachfolger Simons VI., ließ die Festung bald nach dem Tode seines Vaters schleifen, da er die Festung nicht mit einer genügend großen Besatzung und Bestückung ausrüsten konnte und daher befürchtete, dass sie schnell in Feindeshand fallen und zur Bedrohung von Lippstadt werden könnte. Vor einigen Jahren ließ der Lippstädter „Stadtbaumeister“ Dr. Gunter Hagemann die im Gelände noch deutlich erkennbare Festung neu gestalten und eine Erdbastion mit anhängender Kurtine (Hauptwall) aufschütten. Obwohl die aufgeschütteten Festungsteile nicht die ursprüngliche Höhe von 4 m für den Wall und 2 m für die daraufgesetzte Brustwehr erreichen, bietet diese Restaurierung einen guten Eindruck von der ehemaligen Gesamtanlage.
