Nederlands: Negatief. Kau (vroeger meestal gespeld als Kaoe, aan de Kaoebaai) ligt op de oostkust van de 'noordarm' van Halmahera tegenover Djailolo, dat op de westkust ligt. Het viel onder de Sultan van Ternate. Het was een van de weinige gebieden op het eiland die in de 19e eeuw nog iets anders produceerde dan sago, kokosnoten, rijst, tabak, damar en hout, namelijk parels en parelmoerschelpen. Rond 1900 waren de parelbanken echter uitgeput. In de vroege 20e eeuw was een groot deel van de bevolking van Halmahera 'heiden' en de meeste dorpen hadden een soort dorpstempeltje (of wellicht eerder een dodenhuisje), waar de sjamaan de dodenrituelen uitvoerde.
