Beschreibung: Das 1749 ausgefertigte Altarbild weicht von diesem Entwurf nur unwesentlich ab. Es zeigt Bernhard von Clairvaux, wie er von der Muttergottes einen Milchstrahl aus der Brust empfängt, nachdem er trotz Durst und Hunger nicht aufhören wollte zu beten. Das Wunder soll sich 1146 im Speyerer Dom ereignet haben. In der Bernhardsverehrung und der zisterziensischen Tradition spielte das Wunder der Lactatio eine wichtige Rolle, weil Bernhard, in den Worten des Jesuitenpredigers Matthäus Pecher, „durch Annahme der marianischen Milch in nächste Blutsfreundschaft mit Jesus und Maria, mit dieser als ein Sohn, mit jenem als ein Bruder und Mit-Säugling eingetreten ist. Eine vollkommene Mutterschaft wird nicht allein durch Empfängnis und Geburt, sondern auch durch Darreichung der Muttermilch vollendet, mit welchem weißen Nahrungssaft den neugeborenen Säuglingen alle guten Eigenschaften eingeflößt werden.“
Die Marienstatue, vor der Bernhard im Hintergrund des Gemäldes betet, entspricht überlieferten Darstellungen des echten Speyerer Gnadenbildes. Links im Vordergrund sind zwei Putten an einem Bienenkorb zu sehen. Dieses Motiv spielt auf einen metaphorischen Beinamen des Heiligen Bernhard an, der wegen seiner rhetorischen Gewandtheit „doctor mellifluus“ („Lehrer mit der honigsüßen Rede“; wörtl.: „honigfließender Lehrer“) genannt wurde. Vor dem Altar steht ein von Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer gestalteter Putto mit Bienenkorb (der berühmte „Honigschlecker“, der dieses Motiv wieder aufnimmt.Gottfried Bernhard Göz
