DescriptionVank christian cathedral, isfahan.jpg |
17th century vank cathedral, the main church of the 8000 strong christian community in isfahan, is in many ways similar to the contemporary safavid mosques, I have already force fed you so many images of. it is one of a dozen churches in the armenian quarter, new jolfa, which was the result of a forced relocation of tens of thousands of armenians around 1600. new jolfa came across as a very pleasant neighbourhood, coffee bars replacing tea houses as the most obvious difference to tourists. we liked it there, but that could be my coffee addiction talking. the armenians still speak armenian and practise their religion freely. the churches are not hidden away and crosses are displayed openly on top of their domes. armenian women do wear head scarfs in public like their muslim sisters, they are just not very good at it... more surprising than a thriving christian community in isfahan was the fact that the city has a jewish minority of 3000 people living near the friday mosque. |
