| Description |
English: Staircase in Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The legend has it that the sisters of Loretto had no stairway to reach the choirloft of their new chapel and then one day a mysterious carpenter appeared from the desert and proceeded to build a marvelous spiral staircase. There are no nails in the stairway and no center support. The mysterious carpenter disappeared as he had come, without anyone knowing him or payment for his work. The railing is a relatively recent addition (about 100 years), because the sisters were afraid when climbing them without a rail.
