The medals of sovereigns often framed in gold were presented as a special award or replace state awards. The practice, initiated in Poland by King Sigismund Augustus, spread widely at the court of the Vasas. Among the recipients were Franciszek Mniszech, False Dmitriy I, Bartłomiej Nowodworski, papal nuncio Claudio Rangoni, Muscovy envoy Denis Grigorievich Aladyin (april 1613), Duke of Pomerania and the Elector of Brandenburg.
