Gravure contrecollée sur feuille : 18 x 24 cm Caligula (31 août 12 à Antium - 24 janvier 41 à Rome), troisième empereur romain. Il a régné de 37 à 41, et succédé à Tibère. Selon nos principales sources concernant son règne, principalement les récits du biographe latin Suétone et de l'historien grec Dion Cassius, après un début de règne prometteur, durant lequel il connut une grande faveur auprès du peuple romain, il devint peu à peu un empereur autocratique, délaissant et assassinant ceux qui avaient soutenu son ascension, tout en nourrissant une profonde haine pour le Sénat.Caligula meurt à Rome en 41, assassiné par un groupe de prétoriens. |
