Notes | Traditionally attributed to Rembrandt, sometimes even being referred to as one of his masterpieces (Waagen, 1857) and for a long time thought to be a self-portrait, this painting has been the object of a long debate. Gerson (1968), Lecaldano (1969) and Wright (1981) have accepted the attribution to Rembrandt, with more or less conviction, but all of them rejected the hypothesis of it being a self-portrait. Hofstede (1957), Sumovsky (1983) and Tümpel have attributed it to Govaert Flinck. In 1989, the painting was analyzed by the Rembrandt Commission, which attributed it to the "circle of Rembrandt". The commission report was rejected by Pietro Maria Bardi and Luiz Marques, among others, who believe that further research and a cleaning are needed before establishing a definitive attribution. Marques also points to some evidences that indicate the origin of the painting at least in Rembrandt's workshop, such as a drawing of the same composition by Ferdinand Bol, Rembrandt's pupil, and three prints by three different authors, all from the 18th century, reproducing the painting with the inscription "Rembrandt pinxit it". The painting is in bad condition and grossly repainted: the inscription/signature "Rembrandt" over the shoulder of the model is only visible in infrared light. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
