| Description |
Solution pockets are variably-shaped cavities extending into limestone bedrock walls of caves. They are dissolutional features, usually preferentially developed along certain bedding planes (most likely representing minor unconformities). They are also often developed along joints in cave ceilings. Solution pockets appear to form principally during high-flow events (floods) in the phreatic zone, which results in slightly acidic water being forcefully infiltrated along bedding planes and joints. The examples shown here are in Diamond Caverns in Kentucky, which is formed in the Ste. Genevieve Limestone (upper Meramecian Series, upper Middle Mississippian).
