Summary

[edit]
Description
English: An adult gravid female Sphaerodactylus ariasae, one of the smallest vertebrates in the world, resting between human fingers. This specimen, from Isla Beata, holds a single large egg that fills much of the visible abdominal cavity. The egg, laid a few days after this image was taken, is proportionally enormous. Due to biological constraints, neonates cannot be significantly smaller despite the adult's extremely small size, illustrating the minimum size limit for vertebrates.
