Description

Irish round tower and its surrounding graveyard in Turlough, County Mayo, Ireland.

St. Patrick founded the first church here and baptised many people at a nearby well. Although an important monastery, little is known of its history except that in 1351 the Archbishop of Armagh who had long claimed jurisdiction over it was ordered by the Pope to relinquish his rights to the Archbishop of Tuam, After the Dissolution it passed first to the Burkes and then to the Fitzgeralds. The Round Tower is unusually squat and was built between 900 and 1200. The church was built in the 18th century but incorporates an earlier window and a Crucifixion plaque dated 1625.
