The object on Baphomet's lap is a rod with two serpent spiraling up it. It is stated in the article here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baphomet under the section heading, "Eliphas Levi and Baphomet" that it is intended to symbolize eternal life. The crescent behind the rod is supposed to symbolize the atmosphere; according to the article.
