en:Heinrich Vedder claims that the dates on the tombstone are not correct, other historians (e.g. en:Klaus Dierks, Andreas Voigt) have not contested this claim. Tjamuaha died in 1861 instead of 1859, and Maharero died on October 7 1890, not October 5.

The Otjiherero inscription beneath means: Here lie three chiefs who reigned the empire in favour [of the Herero people] but are dead now. They were proper kings.
