Clean up please

[edit]

I'm going to address several things you could clean up regarding this file and its previous versions.

  • There is no need to separately list and explicate a file history in an Information field (reserved to authors).
By uploading new versions (with the link Upload a new version of this file at the section File history) you do get a file history that retains the previous versions, with their respective uploaders.
  • With the shattered and uncontextual structure of Wikipedia, the file name "Map00" is very ambiguous, or indicates an instance in a series, like a photo shoot.
A file name with the date that the map reflects is much more informative and non-subjective.
  • Retaining the older versions, as independent files, and not informing users of obsolete data, you risk disseminating misinformation. Versions 15, 16 and 17 have the Template:Superseded, which is good, but as is apparent, versions earlier than that do not inform about their outdated state in any way.
This kind of preliminary research isn't what users, using your maps, should be required to do. A filename with a date would instantly describe its recency.
  • This is just minor, but some files include Templates for derivative works.
This is an honourable gesture, but the criteria do not actually meet those of a derivative work. From COM:DERIV#What is a derivative work?: In short, all transfers of a creative, copyrightable work into a new medium count as derivative works. Also, all other modifications whose outcome is a new, creatively original work. Some also have Templates for Retouches, which are also unnecessary, as they are often reserved for photographs that have altered data, or in the related jargon, photoshopped. The changes made to the maps are simply updates, and do not need further reasoning apart from the obvious changes in world politics.

There are some options, but I ultimately suggest that you keep a single file with a descriptive file name that you update in the future.

  1. If the old versions contain critical data that you absolutely need to keep, remove all but the most recent version/file from the relevant categories, and keep the gallery on a User-namespace page (enter the URL User:<user>/<page name> and you get the option of creating that page) or somehow separately that users won't mistake them for current information.
  2. If the old versions don't contain critical data and are only of marginal interest, you can request for their deletion. (If you care about the hardware resources of Wikimedia, you can count every file of every version in their File histories and see how much disk space they take.)
  3. A third option is that you upload the earliest map as a new file, and keep replacing it by uploading sequentially newer versions of it, until you reach the most recent one. In this way you can retain all the previous versions in Wikimedia's own system of updates. That option will display only one uploader, though, but you could include the list of authors if you wish.

Update - Israel

[edit]

According to List of Pirate Parties Israel has an officially registered Pirate Party. We need to update the map. Sokuya (talk) 20:02, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
