This is not a Canvasback (Aythya valisineria) - This is a Pochard (Aythya ferina)

It looks like a canvasback to me. It seems like you can distinguish a canvasback from Aythya ferina by the beak. The canvasback beak is black and the A. ferina's beak is more lightly colored. I'm not an expert though and I'll leave the note but I think it's probably wrong.--Davefoc (talk) 17:41, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly not pure Pochard. An expert I consulted suggests that it's probably a hybrid Canvasback × Pochard. His comment: "Looks like it's a bit of both! Quite Canvasback-like but the blue in the subterminal band on the upper mandible indicates impure ancestry." Quite plausible at Slimbridge where they have both species.
