Multiple Contradictions
[edit]The source says "receiving British Distinguished Conduct Medal from King George V. " The filename says "British Distinguished Service Cross" (an award only for officers at the time), and the link in the description is to the American DSC. DuncanHill (talk) 00:27, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
- And there's a less cropped version of the photo here which says "Pvt. Harry Shelly being decorated by King George with the Medal of Honor for gallantry in the advance from Hamel on July 4th. He was the first man to be decorated that day. Gen. John J. Pershing and Gen Holman (British) in the background. 33rd Division. Molliens-au-Bois, France, Aug. 6th, 1918. [Handwritten note on back of photo: "Probably the Distinguished Service Cross not MoH.]"" So it's not clear what medal he was getting, nor indeed how his surname was spelt. - I have found Yockelson, Mitch (2007). "“We Have Found Each Other at Last”: Americans and Australians at the Battle of Hamel in July 1918". Army History (65): 16–25. US Army Center of Military History. which gives his surname as Shelly, and says it was the British DCM, and that it was on the 12th of August. Shelly did later receive the American DSC, but the citation was dated 1919. See my thread on the Wikipedia RefDesks [ey?_What_was_Harold's_surname?_And_who_was_General_Holman? here] for more information. I shall request that this file is renamed.
