possibly from "Nikola Tesla. A Spark of Genius" by Carol Dommermuth-Costa http://books.google.de/books?id=kFFWipanqsoC&pg=PA76#v=onepage&q&f=false

quote

Also in 1891, Nikola gave his second lecture before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers in New York. Here he demonstrated phenomena that the scientists had never seen before: electrical sheets of flame produced by huge Tesla coils; wireless electric lamps; and motors that ran on only one wire—something unhgeared-of in the 1890s. Nikola went so far as to suggest that in the future, motors would run without wires, drawing their energy from the atmosphere. – follows the picture, then as caption: – In 1891 Nikola gave a lecture to the Institute of Electrical Engineers in New York City.

end of quote

What is seen are "tubes" that light up wirelessly in his hands, similar as to the photo three pages furter down (78) in the book.
