Flawed methodology

I can see that the graph was prepared by subtracting the total number of foreign words from the number of all the words in the Turkish dictionary and assuming that remaining words must be Turkish. The problem is, those words are not necessarily Turkish, nor the Turkish Language Association (TDK) claims that they are. The only statistic one can safely infer from TDK's statement are the distribution of the origins of the loanwords in Turkish. See these examples:

TDK counts "laf" as Persian, but gives no information regarding the origin of these words: lafa boğmak, laf açmak, lafa dalmak, laf altında kalmamak, lafa karışmak, laf anlamaz, laf anlatmak, laf aramızda, lafa tutmak, laf atmak, lafazanlık, laf cambazı, laf cambazlığı yapmak, laf cambazlığı, laf çakmak (veya çarptırmak veya dokundurmak), laf çıkarmak, lafçı, laf çıkmak, lafçılık, laf ebeliği, laf dinlemek, laf düşmemek, laf ebesi, laf etmek, laf gelmek, laf geçirmek, laf getirmek, lafı ağzına tıkamak, lafı ağzında kalmak, lafı ağzında gevelemek, lafı ağzında bırakmak, laf götürmek, lafı ağzından almak, lafı çevirmek, lafı bağlamak, lafı dağıtmak, lafı değiştirmek, lafı döndürüp dolaştırmak, lafı edilmek, lafı kesmek, lafı dolandırmak, lafı geçmek, lafı kıçından dinlemek, lafı kısa kesmek, lafı mı olur?, lafı kıçından anlamak, lafına gelmek, lafını (veya lafınızı) balla kestim (veya kesiyorum), lafını bilmek, lafını esirgememek (veya sakınmamak), lafını etmek, lafını geri almak, lafını kesmek, lafını yabana atmamak, lafını yemek, lafını yedirmek, lafı sulandırmak, lafı tartmak

These are all counted as Turkish in the statistics if you hold such a methodology valid.

TDK says "abanoz" is Greek, but these words are going into the Turkish category since their origin is not explicity stated: abanozgiller, abanoz gibi, abanoz kesilmek, abanozlaşıvermek, abanozlaşma, abanozlaştırabilme, abanozlaşmak, abanozlaştırabilmek, abanozlaştırıvermek, abanozlaştırma, abanozlaştırıverme, abanozlaştırmak

You can find many such examples. There's also the problem that agglutination in a language might distort the statistics regarding word origins if you go and count the words directly from a dictionary, that's why such statistics are usually calculated from word roots, not from final words themselves. See such attempts for Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian. Nişanyan made such an attempt for Turkish but I haven't verified it so I'm not going to claim it's true.

In conclusion, I think the methodology used preparing this graph is flawed and also constitutes a good example of original research, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, it is being used on many Wikipedia pages and is used as a conclusive reference in many discussions all over the Internet. It would be better if the graph was removed from any Wikipedia page it is used on to prevent any further spread of the incorrect perception it gives about the origins of the words in the Turkish vocabulary. 3512495a (talk) 05:30, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
