Summary[edit]
DescriptionGeological diversity in western Mare Fecunditatis.png |
English: 88×105 km-sized region on the west of Mare Fecunditatis on the Moon (its shore begins in the left). You can see 4 ghost craters, several wrinkle ridges, one hardly seen lunar dome (Lena et al., 2007, Lena et al., 2013) with several elongated volcanic structures resembling lunar cones (near the center, a bit to the right), and а relatively big volcanic vent (in lower right) — source of a sinuous rille, which crosses rim of a ruined impact crater, two graben, and transits into a chain of small pit craters (result of regolith collapse into lava tube or a fracture) (Zhang et al., 2018, Hurwitz et al., 2013). This volcanic crater, as well as small conical volcanoes near the center, is surrounded with a dark halo of pyroclastic deposits (Wood, 2007, Hofmann, 2016). Moreover, group of volcanoes near the center is accompanied by several meniscus hollows (IMPs), which are not seen here due to very small size (Braden et al., 2014, Zhang et al., 2018). Mare surface to the right from the biggest graben is more than 100 m lower than on the opposite side — maybe, result of subsidence of heavy lava of the mare (Zhang et al., 2018). Photo by Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, made with Wide Angle Camera on 4 January 2010 from altitude 42 km. Sun elevation is 4.9°. North is up. |
