Hello, I'm Carries_mum. This is an ancient user handle from the 1990s. Carrie now towers over me by many inches.

I am a fan of Open Access, the Institutional Repository and Open Science. I recently spent several months on the other side of the Digital Divide. It was an excellent learning experience.

In my undergraduate and graduate science courses, in addition to teaching research and academic content, I also cover practical skills. These include blogging, creating metadata, communicating science with social media AND also, how to contribute to Wikipedia and Wikimedia.

I also teach students how to navigate copyright and intellectual property rules, so that they clearly understand why images in the Public Domain or with Open Access licenses may be used in their essays and presentations, while others, that they may have pulled from the internet are not there's to use without permission. Most students have never learned about this.
