Deutsch: Der Kanton Glarus (italienisch: Glarona) ist ein Kanton im Osten der Schweiz. Glaris ist der französische, lateinische und zugleich der lokale Dialektname (unterschiedlich ausgesprochen) für den Kanton Glarus und dessen Hauptort Glarus. Der Kanton umfasst das Einzugsgebiet der Linth bis zum Walensee, und die Linthebene westlich der Linth bis Bilten sowie den Kerenzerberg. Grosse Höhenunterschiede prägen das Bild des Glarnerlandes: Vom flachen Talboden auf 414 Meter Höhe steigt das Gelände bis auf die 3614 Meter des Tödi. Der 685 km² grosse Kanton entspricht etwa dem Einzugsgebiet der Linth. Das Klöntal ist das wichtigste westliche Seitental. 1807 wurde als erstes Nationalwerk der Schweiz die Linth in den Walensee geleitet und ihr Lauf in den Zürichsee kanalisiert.
English: The Canton of Glarus (German: Glarus) is a canton in east central Switzerland. The capital is Glarus. There are 25 municipalities in the canton (July 2006). The population is German speaking and typically either Protestant or Catholic. There are 38,237 people living in the canton (2007) of which 7,314 (or 19.13%) are foreigners.
