English: Free software, roughly, is software that comes with source code which can be modified and redistributed. The free software movement is a social movement to secure, for software users, the right of people to control their computers and to cooperate with others, when they choose, as part of a community. The movement was launched by the GNU project in 1983. Free software is also referred to as "open-source software", "software libre", "FLOSS", and "FOSS".
Note that “freeware” is almost never “free software”.
