The well area is surrounded by a wall. At the northern end, a locked shelter houses a statue. A plaque above reads "St Johns Well improved 1897".
It is believed that people with mobility issues were once cured by water from this well. A local resident's grand-uncle remembers the ditches lined with crutches and walking sticks, because people left them behind after being healed.[1]
Patterns were once held here, until they were banned by Bishop Marum (1770-1827). Bonfires used to be held on St. John's Eve (June 23) at Móta Achaidh (= Mountnugent Motte) [2][3].
