Why[edit]

Why? --Watchduck (quack) 20:44, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Watchduck: thanks for all your work here and thanks for asking, and the 6488 categories you created in the past 15 years. I must admit that on a regular basis I check such thing for further analysis. Still I have not idea how much categories there are a the moment in Commons, how many for example relate to the Netherlands, and what the general ideas are about the development of the category structure of Commons and other projects. Are we near completion with categorization or just started? Can it be organized in another way, that it becomes superfluousness all along? These are the things that keep me wonder.
More specific, this category is created for temporary analysis purposes, which is with the years still evolving. I have given a short impression of my ongoing effort, see here. If you have more questions, please let me know. -- Mdd (talk) 00:12, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Maybe a sortable table on a user subpage would be better than a category. (The ability to add keywords might be handy for you.) Greetings, Watchduck (quack) 13:54, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Watchduck: , I am well aware that this category is exceptional, so I did some further checking: I noticed there are at the moment about 800.000 hidden categories, of which about 40.000 hidden categories about categories, of which just a handful of categories of categories created by other users: none of them created over 250+ categories. Yet, I know a few handful of Dutch editors, who also created 5.000+ categories, none made a similar categorization of their effort. I guess their primary concern is to develop Wikimedia, while I take an interest in investigate this development as well.
As to your suggestion "what might by handy", I started developing one category of the images upload by me once, which I recently divided them into 12 subcategories. This kind of User categories and flat listings are more common, I also just noticed. A similar division might indeed be helpful. Still, these kinds of efforts are only made possible with the cat-a-lot function, which have limited options. I think creating a sortable table with a magnitude of 10.000 might not even be possible. For now it is fine for me. -- Mdd (talk) 15:56, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
