NPOV tags placed on protest signs

[edit]

Protests, demonstrations, rallies, marches, political events, etc. are not neutral. The signs carried by the participants may be not neutral. So, a file name based on a photograph of a protest sign's content can be accurate, but not NPOV.

Should some of these files found in this category be placed here to get their names changed, when their files names are accurate transcriptions of the actual signs. Files could be placed here by those who disagree with the content of the sign or purpose of the protest. -- Ooligan (talk) 18:41, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm torn. On the one hand, if I were working on a project where I felt we didn't have a bunch of POV-pushers, I'd say, "Sure, that seems reasonable." But we do have a lot of POV-pushers, and I can readily imagine people taking pictures of certain signs -- or even making them themselves -- just to get that title onto Commons. So I'm not sure we can have a hard-and-fast rule here. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • On a quick look, though, the issues here are overwhelmingly with descriptions, not titles. Most of the ones that have dubious titles at the moment are the ones about Neturei Karta: simply using the words "Jews" or "Judaiasm" to refer to Neturei Karta and their doctrines would be like using "Christians" to refer to (on the one hand) Westboro Baptist Church or on the other Keir Hardie. - Jmabel ! talk 21:37, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also: I mass-tagged a lot of these because a particular contributor's work was full of POV descriptions (of which I fixed 50 or so myself, slow careful work). You can see in the history for a lot of these my summary, 'Mark as needing review of description. Doubtless some of these will be fine, but they need review. - Inserting "{{NPOV}}"'. - Jmabel ! talk 21:40, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
