2007 [edit]

If anyone reads this page anymore :)

The captions are now complete. As it has been raised nearly a year ago, there aren't that many media files, still, so it is likely that this list will pretty much stay. I will nonetheless scour the Commons and see if I can compile a decent 365-member list within three days :) —UED77 15:14, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I think there just isn't to much interest in media because of the formats we use here and because of existence of YouTube and such. Anyway I think we should go for 2008 rather then 2007. Most of the titles for the current media are not even present and the templates aren't ready to be divided by year. --Nux (talk··dyskusja) 00:55, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm very happy it's all finished. There are more files now, and I suppose it's possible there *might* be enough if you use some low quality ones. However, I'd prefer to avoid that. The setup we have now is good. Raul654 01:31, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
You're right, 2008 would be a more realistic goal. I know there are some files from known series that are not MOTD, but others are, so we could use the remainder. And cross our fingers that we'd receive some nice new files over the following year. —UED77 18:11, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Yearly [edit]

How are we going to deal with this as we get into the next year. So far, i only see variables for the month and the date. Maybe someone should think about adding a year variable to the templates. -- Sam916 02:48, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

There aren't nearly enough media files to do new ones every day forever. There's *barely* enough to do one for every day of the year. (There are roughly 400 combined songs and videos, of which 45 are from Handel's Messiah, so I intentionally avoided using all of them). So, when setting up the rotation, I set it up to cycle back at the end of the year (like the selected anniveraries on Wikipedia). Raul654 18:46, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
what is with this place? there's barely anything to get from here!--205.202.240.104 16:16, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't understand the question. Are you talking about commons? The media-of-the-day page? Something else? Raul654 21:07, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
the IP is right in some way. There is no information of how new Media gets added and who chooses them (Raul?). E.g. I´ve uploaded a new video called media:Moving_Octopus_Vulgaris_2005-01-14.ogg and don´t if / where I should add it as a MotD. --MilesTeg 18:40, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
hm... well, according to [1] there is no certain system of what´s in the loop--MilesTeg 01:27, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

MOTD German [edit]

I have added the german module of the MOTD to the front page. Someone will have to fix the small things, like the text that remains english. -- Sam916 02:44, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Bah! You beat me to it by a few seconds! :) Raul654 02:50, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Sorry about that. -- Sam916 02:53, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

More files coming [edit]

I just got back from vacation today, and I have a *ton* of videos from the animal kingdom to upload (about 80, give or take), so look for the number of videos to double overnight. Raul654 03:20, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

If you need any help, I could help you encode the videos. -- Sam916 01:25, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
I converted about 40 while I was in Florida. I haven't gotten to the other 40 yet because I have been sick since I got back. Raul654 01:26, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
I finished uploading my vacation pics and videos. The combined gallery can be found here. Raul654 17:13, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Reorganization [edit]

In the current version, it is impossible to add another translation. I'd like to reorganize the page like COM:POTD, with all those neat (and slow? :-x) templates, so that it would be easily expanded.

IMHO it would be a good idea to also add an icon to represent the media type.

Any ideas, objections?

 • It might be a good idea to add the year to the template names, but that would be quite a big heap of work... So?
 • I think it would be good if every file would show an icon showing the media type (music/video/...). Well, if I think about that, it would be fine if the image description page would show such icon automatically (would have to be built into MediaWiki... wait a minute, well, there is bugzilla:1578).
 • Of course, a link to the file description page should be somewhere, too...
 • Any ideas about layout? The POTD layout is beautiful, but does not really fit this, as we won't have the large picture to show. What about something like this:

18 [edit]

?

Choose a new media file

19 [edit]

?

Choose a new media file

--Mormegil 12:52, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Extremely bad idea. The POTD page is very slow to load, and that's only doing one month's worth. It would be a factor of 12 worse for this page - making it virtually impossible to load. Also, I am not keen on adding new translations until someone in those other languages actually expresses an interest in doing a media of the day page. And, if they should do it, then they should use an entirely different page, instead of trying to cram them all on a single page. Raul654 05:49, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

You question the idea of one page for all languages (which I have not invented, BTW; I have just seen the German caption side by side with the English one, which is obviously unscalable). That is fine by me, it's not any big difference if the one-day template would show all languages or just the selected one. I don't understand what should be the "slow" part of it? On POTD, there are 30 pictures, which take quite some time to load; that would not be the case here. To be honest, I don't think having all 365 items on a single page is a good idea, anyway.

I have simplified the template a bit so it displays only one language, what about that? Better? Worse? --Mormegil 12:58, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

The POTD page loads slowly, but not because of the 30 thumbnailed pictures. It loads slowly because it transcludes (by my estimate) just under 1,300 templates. Pages with lots of templates load slowly; pages with ridiculously large numbers of templates load very slowly.
This page loads slowly with roughly 730 templates; each new language adds (at least) another 365 and makes the page more crowded and harder to use. Putting all langugages, for the entire year on a single page is just out of the question.
So you can break it up by months (have all the languages for january on a page, like POTD), or you can break it up by language (like this page is now - have the whole years' worth of english templates on the same page). I prefer the latter, but I'm not dead-set on it. Raul654 17:54, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Now I get it, you are right that using hundreds (or thousands) of templates is not a good idea. So -- why not break it up both by month and by language? It would make the page more maintanable and friendlier to servers. I don't think splitting the months has any significant negative effects, splitting the languages makes it a bit more difficult to translate the description, but I can live with that. (I have (temporarily?) removed the icons since it would require manual adding that information to all MOTD files, which I am too lazy to do now; still I think the icons would make the page much prettier. ;-) ) --Mormegil 16:45, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

License and other info [edit]

Plase take care that featured media files at least have accurate and complete license info, and ideally an informative description page. I belive that this should be an important criterium for selecting featured media.

Note that today's featured file, Image:Bwv558.ogg, does not have sufficient license info: it is tagged as cc-by-sa without giving the author (in this case, the interpreter). I have already contacted the uploader about this issue... but as I said, this should be done before the file gets to the main page! -- Duesentrieb(?!) 14:03, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Almost universal template [edit]

Hi.

I used something like this on Polish version only less universal (here de version):

Januar 2006
Datum Datei Titel
01-1 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

01-2 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

01-3 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

01-4 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

I belive this will make translations easier. I've also used Motd-head-pl for headers so they can be put into place only once and you can change whole table with two templates.

You may also want to see the code of Polish version as I messed with parser function and made it so it will only show current month on main page.

Oh BTW on 2007 we can just use something like:

Januar 2007
Datum Datei Titel
2007-01-1 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

2007-01-2 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

2007-01-3 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

2007-01-4 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

Or like this:

Januar 2007
Datum Datei Titel
01-1 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

01-2 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

01-3 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

01-4 [ Info · Bearbeiten ]

none [ Bearbeiten (de) · (en) ]

Template [edit]

Look Media of the day. I think it's good idea to add it into media files. MOTD consist descriptions at more than 5 3-4 (sometimes 5-6) languages for every day / file, but when we open file information, we don't look them. ~ putnik 18:24, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Besides "by category" and "by user name", my "Catfood" commons RSS feed script can create a "medium of the day" feed, here. When I set up MOTD in January 2006, I picked one file for every day of the year. Since then, MOTD has been on a loop. Raul654 (talk) 20:56, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I'll take the liberty of switching some of the old classical music pieces with shiny new video files. We can do better now than that ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 15:03, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Feel free to get rid of the 30-odd Handel Messiah pieces we have in the loop. Make sure you update the captions accordingly when you do. But before you go beyond that, please poke me first. Raul654 (talk) 02:45, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Is there some way that people are able to nominated for MOTD? For example, I'd like to nominate File:Russian national anthem at Medvedev inauguration 2008.ogg. --russavia (talk) 16:01, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

I think we need to go beyond just looping it. The loop is not obvious given its length, so few are going to notice, but I think most would agree we should have a new one each time and a more formal process for choosing them. Having said that, we need some people to take on the responsibilities of getting things set up and running that process, and until such people come forward there isn't much more we can do. Richard001 (talk) 21:36, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I'd also like to know if I can add a video to the rotation, specifically this one File:Bellagio casino fountain feature.ogv. mahanga (talk) 21:11, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Use native player? [edit]

Is there a reason this page uses Media: links in the table, rather than the native player which is used for the currently featured media? As is, it's not even immediately clear from the list which files are audio and which ones are video.--Eloquence (talk) 10:12, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

template system [edit]

The template system for Motd seems to be not very elaborate. How for example are updates managed? If I change the Motd for April 25 e.g. (it was always the same since 2006: Template:Motd/04-25), how are translations updated? If I update it to a Mozart sonata, Template:Motd-de/04-25 will still speak about astronauts having fun.

I think the whole system needs to be changed to something similar to the Potd system. The only question: Motd looks almost dead. Are there any people interested in updating Motd? --Slomox (talk) 03:05, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

When I set up the queue, there were *barely* enough media files to fill a full year. That's why the system is static -- because there's no sense in rotating it when there aren't all that many files. Nor, seeing as how most of the files are still not translated into more than a handful of languages, is there all that much enthusiasm for translating them. Raul654 (talk) 03:55, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, translating cannot really be stimulated by a system that unavoidably will break translations ;-)
Do you think, that now - three years later - there are enough good media files (and enough human contributors) to change the system to a non-rotating system? --Slomox (talk) 04:48, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
