Notes
  • Significance: Built in 1773 for Captain Joseph Rose, 273 Water Street is the oldest dwelling and shop and the third oldest building surviving in Manhattan. Originally built as a two and 1/2 story brick fronted frame structure with a shared cartway that ran to the East River, the building was raised to four stories in 1904 after a fire. Another fire in 1976 seriously damaged the building.
  • Survey number: HABS NY-5686
