English: Pieter van den Broecke taken captive by the king of Jakatra, 1619
Description

English: Pieter van den Broecke taken captive by the sultan of Mataram (1619). J.P. Coen decided in 1619 that Jakatra, later Batavia, would be a more suitable base for the VOC on Java than Bantam and travelled there to conquer the city. The sultan of Mataram, within whose influence Jakatra fell, was obviously opposed and put up fierce resistance. Van den Broecke was a commander on Java and had just sealed a peace treaty with the sultan of Mataram. The latter invited Van den Broecke to come on a pleasure cruise and subsequently had him taken hostage in order to force the Dutch to leave Batavia Castle. However the Dutch did not accede to the demands, which prompted fresh conflicts. The plate is taken from the work 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien' by Francois Valentyn.
