Summary[edit]
DescriptionBasking in warmth (2000548940).jpg |
English: THULE AIR BASE, Greenland,---It’s a warm and balmy day at Thule Air Base as temperatures rise 30 degrees from last week’s chill factor of -18 degrees Fahrenheit, giving a Security Forces Airman the chance to shed some layers from his Arctic gear. Airman 1st Class Frank Lillich, 821st SFS, patrols near Storm Shelter 2 during a snowstorm today produced by the elevated temperature here. Eleven storm shelters are located one each mile from the main base to the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System facility in order to protect operators from the unpredictable polar weather. Off-base travel has been restricted recently due to the hazardous conditions and reports of polar bears roaming the Thule Defense Area, and all Airmen are required to carry full Arctic gear bags in their vehicles including gloves, goggles, pants and ventilated face masks. |
