English: This picture is based upon the festival of flying fish hold by Tao (aka Yami), one ethnic group of Taiwanese aborigines.
中文（臺灣）：日治時期，相較於當時台灣人與原住民的疏遠，日本畫家在題材選擇的多樣性、觀察距離的接近度以及細節描繪的忠實上，處處表現了更大的興致與熱情。於此風氣下，具表現主義風格的御園生暢哉也劃了一幅雅美族人的新船下水祭。紅頭嶼的雅美人在長達三年預備期後開始著手伐木雕船，並於船成下水之日舉行盛大的祭典，這便是御園生所畫的場景。船員拋船擺動，附和船上持刀站立的掌舵者的歌聲而吆喝著（歌聲大意為：我們協力去伐木，辛苦造船已完成，祈求船員都健康，漁獲也豐收。）而新船在幾番拍打拋起折騰之後，便下水試航，同時岸上也會進行殺機祭船靈的儀式... 御園生以削切的筆勢與堆疊的油彩製造出雜沓的塊面與線條，兩相交織在對角斜向的構圖上，其中所呈現出的失衡感無非是為了傳達祭典當下的熱鬧場景，但可能也是畫家融入其境的心情感受呢！（劉學穎）
