Notes
  • Significance: In 1847, Congress appropriated one million dollars to build the fort as the largest fort in the country to protect Philadelphia and the harbor. It was first occupied in 1861 during Civil War & used to house Confederate prisoners until 1865. The fort was garrisoned during the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. It was closed in 1944.
