Description |
Captain Jack or Grizzly Bear Paw, medicine man of Kisbyyoks, British Columbia. Henry Wellcome commissioned the artist W. Langdon Kihn to make portrait drawings of certain native American people wearing their traditional costume. To make the portraits Kihn used a special kind of patent pastel. Kihn's works in the Wellcome Library include this portrait of Captain Jack, a medicine man from British Columbia, Canada, wearing a magnificent headdress made from bear's claws. The portrait forms a pair with a portrait of Captain Jack's wife, Noch Slak. Iconographic Collections |
