  • Significance: Colle Service Station, presently known as Simeon Market, stands as an example of rural Virginia architecture of the early 1930's. This gas station was built of local fieldstone and surface boulders and was designed by its original owner, Frank Mehring. Located between Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and James Monroe's Ash Lawn Highland, this was the only service station within a several mile radius. Its frieze, labeled with the word "Simeon," references the post office that was once located in the vicinity. The building stands on land once owned by Dr. Philip Mazzei, an Italian friend of Jefferson's who settled in Albemarle County and attempted to start a vineyard. It is from his estate, "Colle," that the service station originally derived its name. The pumps were removed from under the station's porte-cochere in 1991 and the building is now used as a country store.
