Notes
  • Structural system joinery includes rawhide thongs and wooden pegs.
  • Significance: The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints started construction of its Salt Lake City Tabernacle on 26 July 1864, and held its first conference in the immense auditorium 3 years later. A balcony, added in 1870, completed the building. Sometimes compared to an inverted ship's hull, the building is 250' long and 150' wide. The interior space is clear: there are no intermediate supports for the roof. 9 lattice arches on 12' centers span 132' between masonry piers in the center section.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-3
  • Survey number: HAER UT-1
  • Building/structure dates: 1864- 1867 Initial Construction
  • Building/structure dates: 1870 Subsequent Work
