Das Spielen im Freien vermittelt Freude an der Bewegung.

Die neuzeitliche Körperkultur in Deutschland hat ihren Ursprung in der Leibeserziehung, wie sie Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts beispielsweise von Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths entwickelt wurde. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn griff die Idee der harmonischen Bildung von Körper und Geist auf und schuf mit seiner „deutschen Turnkunst“ eine Volksbewegung. 1811 eröffnete Jahn in der Berliner Hasenheide den ersten öffentlichen Turnplatz für seine Leibesübungen im Freien. Zwischenzeitlich verfolgt und verboten, erlebt das Turnen im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts einen bedeutenden Aufschwung; ab 1861 ist Turnunterricht an Schulen verbindlich vorgeschrieben. Mit der zunehmenden Verbreitung des englischen Sports im Zuge der Industrialisierung sehen sich die Turner gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in ihrer Vormachtstellung bedroht. Streitpunkte sind vor allem die Ausrichtung auf individuelle Höchstleistung und der Wettkampfcharakter. Obwohl insbesondere der Fußball als Konkurrenz angesehen wird, bieten einige Turnvereine das Spiel jedoch selbst an. Gemeinsam ist beiden die ursprüngliche Idee, über das Spielen im Freien Freude an der Bewegung zu vermitteln und die Persönlichkeit ganzheitlich zu entwickeln.
