Il modello è uno dei ragazzi utilizzati da Gloeden durante il suo soggiorno a Francavilla a Mare, in Abruzzo, presso il pittore Michetti, e data lo scatto ai primi anni 1880. Fu pubblicata nel 1889 col titolo "Sicilian (Arab type)" in William Paton, Picturesque Sicily, Harper & Brothers Publishers, NY 1898.
