Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreenland melt pond 2 (7637755560).jpg |
While surface melting at high altitudes will result in the conversion of snow to slush that will then refreeze into denser snow or a thin ice layer, widespread melting at low altitudes can create small ponds of melt water, particularly at the perimeter of the ice sheet. Around the border of the pond, smaller collections of melt water are seen between ridges of ice. CREDIT: Michael Studinger, NASA GSFC, 2008. |
